Where Are They From?

Malayalam Movies are movies that are produced in India by the film industry of Kerala. Karala main language is Malayalam and its movies are produced in this regional dialect, which is why these films are know by two names – Kerala Movies of Malayalam Movies. Both refer to the same film and film industry.

What Are They About?

Kerala or Malayalam Movies are most commonly about society and family and the problems they face every day. They tend to be less overly dramatic and far-fetched than typical Bollywood films.

What are Some Great Malayalam Movies?

Guru

This film was selected to represent India at the Oscars in 1997. This is the only Malayalam film that has been selected for this honor to date.

The movie, in the tradition of Malayalam Film is part science fiction, part a dissection of society, focusing on terrorism and its effects. In particular, the film focuses on Hindu and Muslim tensions after a inflammatory attack on a temple by people pretending to be Muslims. The tension and resulting retaliation is the movie’s plot, following a group of Muslims who seek refuge with a Guru.

Whilst there, one of them experience a vision which turns into a metaphor for the current situation and provides a revelation.

Pazhassi Raja

This film was the most expensive Malayalam film ever made, and the first Indian film to be released in Blue Ray.

Kaazhcha (2004)

The story follows Pavan, a boy who moves to Kerala after an Earthquake destroys everything he ows. The lives as a beggar until Operator Madhavan meets him and eventually he and his family warm to the beggar boy and accept him as family. Unfortunately, the Government decides they want him to return to his home. How will Pavan and his new family take the news?

Udayananu Tharam (2005)

When a script is stolen from Udayabhanu, he despairs at the suddent success of the thief, success he knows belonged to him. However, he soon meets Babykuttan and they begin working on a film along with Saroj. The two quarrel and Saroj quits leaving Udayabhanu to finish the film on his own.
